Simple English ~ Nicola Prentis

Thoughts on ELT, English and whatever else comes into my head

ELT Celebrity encounters

I’ve just read Mike Griffin’s post about Stephen Krashen, a big name-in-lights ELT figure, which gives me an opportunity to share a friend’s anecdote about her meeting of a similarly big name in the field. He (or she) doesn’t come out of it very well but you’d hope, if they ever read this, they’d recognise themselves and  resolve to pull their head out of their backside.

So, at a conference she bumped into Mr (or Mrs) ELT and told him how she had based one of her Delta assignments on a piece of his work and received a Merit for it.

His response?

First, take a moment to think what you feel might be appropriate…congratulations, an enquiry as to which piece or what she’d done with it…quite a few options really.

No.

“That’s funny. I met someone just recently who’d done an assignment based on something of mine but they got a Distinction.”

I am a) definitely going to use this as inspiration for a character in a story one day and b) going to talk to as many ELT superstars as possible at conferences to see if I can add stories to this one day.

I meet Stephen Krashen recently and decided that this was an appropriate way to deal with the situation…

    What do you reckon?

Hilarious! That would make a lovely series of photos but would make it more difficult to tell the truth should they commit ego inflated doozies as it would be so easy to match perpetrator and photobombee.
